XX from PANAMA

I feel at ease to know that my parents are enjoying their naturalist roots during their later years. From backpacking through Europe in the 70’s to hiking throughout the country, they have always enjoyed the simple life and had a great appreciation for nature. Somehow I did not inherit the rustic roots – as I reside in SoHo, NY preparing to launch a fashion collection – but I do appreciate fine craftsmenship and hiking (just not camping and dirt so much:). Upon their recent trip to Panama my father took photographs of some of the local artisans and surroundings. I am drawn to the woven x patterns found in many of the crafts, art, building constructions, and nature (much like the crossing of the clothespins in the Line Dry logo).

LAUGHING CAT, 1961

I was lucky enough to stumble upon the launch party celebrating the collaboration of Roy Lichtenstein, Barneys New York, and the Art Production Fund on a new limited edition collection.  I loved the playful nature and strong graphic characteristics of Roy Lichtenstein’s works (even though it was produced for the masses in this case).  The pieces were accentuated by ruby red lighting and mid-century style goodies such as silver dollar sized cherry pies, miniature ice cream cones, and cherry tomato sized BLT’s… Summer is coming!

I’ve always been inspired by mid-century offerings, so you can imagine my excitement to see Barneys celebrating  60 years of Chloé (founded in 1952, Paris) in their Madison avenue windows!  I love the playful braids, and the blocks of color would be a fanciful hit in Pema’s new room….
